Staying Safe at Home as We Age

If you’ve ever had a burglar or an attempted break in at your home you will understand the anxiety of being home alone, especially as we get older.  After a walk-in burglary (unlocked back door) at 2:00am one night, I became a frightened senior citizen.  Staying safe at home is very important. Eventually, we moved to what was perceived to be a safer neighborhood.  But still, I felt insecure when the sun sets in peaceful Boynton Beach and I am alone.  And I have 2 dogs, who are usually snoring in the late-night hours!

Video Doorbells & Smart Locks

In our new home, we installed a video doorbell, which connects to an app on my smart phone.  If motion is detected, the doorbell chimes, and I can see a live video of the entryway and sidewalk.  If someone rings the doorbell, I can answer and they can talk to me, through the camera to my phone! I am also notified if any motion is detected and alert neighbors who use the same system.

Take the smart doorbell a step further and get an indoor security camera or an entire system. A burglar will have second thoughts when they notice! Smart cameras, which can be monitored by smart phones, can be found for less than $40.

Change your door locks to smart locks which open either to a code or fingerprint.  Take that key out from under the door mat, it’s the first place anyone would look!  Keep in mind, friends and family may have to get in if there is an emergency.

Fall Prevention

Previously I wrote about “Preventing Falls in Our Homes.”  I struggled wearing one of those fracture boots and every little thing would trip me up.  Play it safe and pick up rugs and electrical cords, making sure pathways in your home are clear.

Know Your Neighbors

Ask your neighbors to observe your home and please come over if they notice anything out of the ordinary.  When having a new contractor or maintenance person over for the first time, invite a neighbor to check in or come for a coffee.  And use a service such as the BBB or Angi to check references first.

Secure Your Garage

If you have a garage, secure it!  Get a lock on your inside door so even if the garage door is opened, you are safe.  Again, there are automated openers that work with apps on your smart phone, making them burglarproof!

Motion detector lights around the corners of your home will also scare off anyone looking for easy access to your property.

Staying safe at home can be accomplished by eliminating these concerns about safety have helped me to have peace of mind and peaceful dreams!  But that’s another posting.
